Government Grants for solar panels have been abolished and replaced with the cash back scheme, known as the Feed-in Tariff, whereby those who invest in PV are rewarded in 3 ways:
1. For Generating Electricity - The Generation Tariff
This is a guaranteed payment direct from your energy supplier for each unit of electricity that you generate.
As of 12th December 2011 the Generation Tariff will be paid at 21p per kilowatt hour (kWh), and is generated by statute to track the retail price index for the next 25 years. (Source: http://www.energysavingtrust.org.uk)
Typically panels will reduce your electricity bills by 25-30% by utilising the electricity generated produced to be used to power your applicances etc. (This is dependent on the capacity of the system.) For Using the Electricity they Generate to reduce their electricity bills.
2. By using the electricity that is generated by your installation, you will not need to buy electricity from your provider.
3. For Exporting Electricity to the National Grid - The Export Tariff
The rest of the electricity, created by you, but not used by you, will be "exported" into the national grid. The export tariff is set at 3.1p p/kWh.
